CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2026

Jersey Mike's Naismith Courage Award winners

MaeKHIYA Rameau Collin Hughes

Maekhiya Rameau

SANDUSKY HIGH SCHOOL -SANDUSKY, OH

Maekhiya Rameau has faced extraordinary challenges throughout her high school years, navigating chronic housing instability that often left her and her family moving between temporary living situations and, at times, without stable housing. Beginning in her freshman year, she experienced significant emotional strain, including separation from her siblings, before eventually being taken in by her grandmother. Even then, Maekhiya carried much of the responsibility for her own well-being—managing her education, basic needs, and daily life. Despite sleepless nights, inconsistent transportation, and the emotional weight of her circumstances, she remained fully committed to her academics and her role as a student-athlete. Now a senior, Maekhiya is mature, driven, and remarkably self-reliant, using her experiences not as setbacks, but as motivation to pursue stability, education, and a stronger future - making her an exceptional winner of the Jersey Mike’s Subs Naismith High School Basketball Courage Award.

Maekhiya has faced extraordinary challenges that would discourage most students. Despite sleepless nights and the emotional weight of her situation, she never gave up on her commitment as a student-athlete.

Collin Hughes

VANCE CHARTER SCHOOL - HENDERSON, NC

Collin Hughes has shown extraordinary courage and resilience in the face of life-threatening adversity, persevering through a rare autoimmune blood disorder that abruptly changed his life as a healthy, multi-sport athlete. After being hospitalized multiple times, including extended stays in the PICU, Collin endured intense treatments, uncertainty, and long separations from school and sports. Despite these challenges, he remained positive and determined—finding ways to give back to his community, encouraging teammates from the sidelines, and even creating a small business to spread hope during his recovery. Through relentless effort, faith, and grit, Collin rebuilt his strength, returned to the basketball court, and became a key contributor to a championship team. His unwavering optimism, selflessness, and refusal to give up have made him a powerful example of courage, inspiring his school and community both on and off the court.

When he had every reason to give up and feel sorry for himself, he did the exact opposite. His courage allowed him to excel on the court and help his team win its first conference championship.
